He was 92 years old. A native Californian, born in Fresno and raised in Long Beach, he attended Poly High School and Long Beach City College before transferring to UC Berkeley where he graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After college he worked for Westing-house in Pittsburgh and San Francisco before joining the US Naval Reserve as an Ensign. As an aircraft electronics specialist, he trained at Bowdoin College, ME, MIT, Cambridge, MA and later at Pearl Harbor, where he became a Target Drone Officer, flying target drones for anti-aircraft gunnery training.

In 1944, he joined the Navy as an Electronics Maintenance Officer and served on the aircraft carrier, Antietem, where he flew 12' wing-span drones. Later in life, his passion for flying had a rebirth with his beautifully handcrafted small planes flown competitively with the Black Sheep Squadron in Los Angeles. In 1946 David returned to California and began working for the Southern California Edison Company, first as a lineman and later as an assistant engineer. Ever the dreamer, he took a leave from the SCE to take a cycling trip through Europe and reluctantly returned home to rejoin Edison as distribution and protection specialist where, following in the footsteps of his father and brother, he remained for 26 years, eventually becoming a Chief Protection Engineer. In 1976, he retired and moved to Visalia, CA where he established his own consulting business, working as a specialist on high voltage systems for the Southern California Metropolitan Water District and Burbank Water and Power.

At 82, he finally retired to a life in the Valley, as Visalia was home, where his mother and her family had settled in the early part of the century. Peter Perkins Flowers, an iconic shop owned by his uncle and aunt, Peter and Gerda Perkins, once graced the corner of South Locust and West Willow Streets on the property of the family home, which is now the parking lot for Kaweah General Hospital. David was on the Board of Self-Help Enterprises where he also served as Vice President and President. As part of the SHE mission, he especially enjoyed the work he and his colleagues did repairing and updating plumbing and electricity in people's homes throughout the Valley. David was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Visalia.

An avid skier, backpacker, skin diver, amateur photographer and nature lover, David spent his life embracing the mystery of life and all its bounty. He is survived by his two children, Melinda Hodges-Wax of Brooklyn, NY and Stephen Taylor Hodges of Long Beach, CA, his step sons Rius and Peter Billing, daughter-in-law Laurie Billing, grandchildren Kai Kunkel, Tadj Roi Hodges, Gabe and Rose Wax, Denver, MacKenzie, Alexander, Shane and Danielle Billing along with two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was married to Noel Stanton Hodges (1951) and later to Diane Perkins Hodges (1976).
