REGISTER reeze victims find employment By Jed Chemabaeff Staff writer LINDSAY Miguel Var hands are his biggest asset He has used them to pick oranges tear open his pay check buy groceries and feed his 2 year old daughter Alana But his hands were idled in January when a freeze destroyed Tulare citrus crop Vargas 21 ofLind say was among 3260 people to file freeze related unem ployment insurance claims county officials said Some have moved in search of work Others have chosen to stay and tough it out until the next harvest But Vargas is using his hands again He and at least 50 other freeze affected workers from the Lindsay and Strathmore areas have been hired by the city of Lindsay to work on public works pro jects said Brad Albert well nessrecreation director and freeze relief lead for Lindsay In Lindsay more than 2000 people a fifth of the popu lation hold jobs related to the citrus industry Each person hired in the program by the city of Lind say signs a five month con tract at $10 an hour All must show proof of residency The employees are paid through a state Community Develop ment Block Grant those who chose to stay we are hoping to keep them Albert sail these people are making money they are able to take care of their family There is pride These people are hard or those who are undocu mented Albert said financial assistance has been provided by nonprofit and community service organizations On Tuesday Vargas and about 10 others worked on the field at Lindsay High rank Skadan Stadium The project includes: Installation of more than 280000 square feet of turf New walkways in the bleachers Lighting improvements The stadium project is just one being completed in the community Workers are also renovating parks and alleys and preparing the McDer mont ield House and Sports Center a community center scheduled to open in March 2008 Vargas worked various jobs before being hired by the city last month He wants to go back to school and earn a cer tificate to died peacefully in her Tulare home on Monday evening July 30 2007 She was bom on July 4 1928 in San rancisco to rank and Mae Rosenthal She graduated from Lowell High School in San rancisco and attended San rancisco City College where she met Albert uller Enid and Al were married in 1949 and celebrated their 58th wed ding anniversary in May of this year Enid found her greatest satisfac tion
