linger about the defi nition of Hispanic and the application to them The representatives Dennis Cardoza of Merced and Devin Nunes of Tulare are Portuguese Americans Their families arrived decades ago Stanislaus Riv er The Lyons Reservoir now holds about 5800 acre feet of water for Tuolumne County users It would cost about $48 million to boost the capacity to 25000 acre feet and about $62 million detective says The Associated Press LOS ANGELES A retired homicide detective testified Wednesday that actor Robert Blake told him in 1999 that he had impregnated a woman during a one night stand and he wanted her abducted to undergo an abortion and if that failed to have her killed said going to hire a doctor going to abort her and if that work going to whack William Welch testi fied during a preliminary hearing to determine whether Blake must stand trial on charges of murder ing his wife Bonny Lee Bakley Bakley 44 was shot as she sat in the car near favorite restaurant where they dined on May 4 2001 Blake 69 has claimed he went back into the restaurant to retrieve a gun he carried for protection and found Bakley shot when he returned to the car Blake gaunt and gray listened grimly to the testimony figured it Welch a Los Angeles police offi cer for 21 years before he became a private detective in 1985 said he had done work for Blake over about 10 years and had become friends before the actor asked him in October 1999 to go for a walk by the Los Angeles River which runs near Studio City home Welch said Blake told him he wanted to do something about the woman and Welch suggested he offer her sums from $10000 to $100000 she would go Robert Blake looks around the courtroom on the first day of his preliminary hearing Wednesday at the Van Nuys Courthouse in Los Angeles He is crossed me You double dealt me and who you Blake said lawyer objected to the tape on grounds it was recorded illegally The judge initially said it could be used but later said he would have to research the law In testimony about the night of the killing police Sgt Charles Knolls said a diner Michael Duffi cy observed Blake near restrooms appearing nervous and running his hands through his hair Dufficy told the detective he lat er went to the room and saw that someone had vomited in a trash can As Dufficy was leaving the restaurant he saw Blake who appeared to be hyperventilating and was asking someone for water Knolls testified Blake has been jailed in solitary confinement since his April arrest Last summer he said he had no motive to kill Bakley know her that well but what I before moving back to Porterville In 1946 they decided to call Visalia home Several years after the death of her husband Helen moved to Ran cho Cucamonga where she lived with her son Robert and his wife Sylvia who cared for her until her health made it necessary to move to the Plott Nursing Home in Ontario Helen was a devoted wife and mother She loved animals enjoyed gardening and was also noted for her cooking Helen loved children and espe cially enjoyed being with her grandchildren who were an intri cate part of her life Helen was preceded in death by her husband Tony and a brother Theodore Cunningham She is sur vived by her daughter Elaine Sand berg and her husband Dale of Salem Ore sons Robert Salsa and his wife Sylvia of Rancho Cuca monga and Roger Salsa and his wife Wilma of Morro
