Visalia Times-Delta Tuesday, October 9, 2001 BRIEF San Diego school official's e-mail contains threat SAN DIEGO The president of the board of the state's second largest school district has apologized for sending an e- mail that suggested two colleagues be shot. Sue Braun, the elected president of the San Diego Unified School District board, is expected to repeat her apology in public but will reject a board member's call for her resignation at a meeting Tuesday, the district's communication director, Tom Mitchell, said Monday. Criticism of the message comes amid heightened concern about school-related violence following two shootings at San Diego-area campuses. Wire reports VALLEY BRIEFS Police find explosives, clear neighborhood TAFT More than 50 homes were evacuated Sunday, morning after police found high explosives and blasting caps in a residence where they were serving a search warrant. Local police and the Kern County sheriff's deputies were looking for Mark Shannon Parkhurst, 36, who was wanted on child molestation charges, according to Taft Sgt.

Ed Whiting. Parkhurst was not there during the 7:15 a.m. raid, but authorities found the bomb materials and ordered the evacuation. A bomb disposal unit was still working Sunday afternoon when Parkhurst turned himself in to Taft police. He was booked on two counts of continuous molestation of two or more children, and one count of possession of explosive materials, Whiting said.

According to Whiting, two of the girls, both under age 14, were allegedly molested by Parkhurst after he befriended them. Parkhurst is being held on $1 million bail, Whiting said. Kern County pushes for dairy reviews BAKERSFIELD Kern County planners are recommending a new policy that would effectively require an environmental review for new dairies. The county had allowed dairies to be built or expanded without permits or public hearings if they are not too close to schools or homes. That practice was temporarily ended last year after public outcry and could change permanently under a proposal county supervisors are set to consider Tuesday.

County planners recommend that all new and expanding dairies go through a public review process before gaining approval. That idea is expected to get an airing at Tuesday's meeting. If supervisors do not implement the proposal, planners have said they will conduct a yearlong review of all potential dairies at a cost of more than $200,000. Job interview goes bad for government worker MERCED A candidate for city attorney was robbed when he pulled over to adjust his clothing before going to an interview at city hall. Bradley Sullivan, an attorney from Sutter Creek, was robbed of about $100 Friday afternoon, according to Merced Sgt.

Andre Matthews. Sullivan pulled over his car to unruffle himself when a man reached through the open window, stuck something into his back and took his wallet. Sullivan went to city hall and reported the robbery. Police searched the area but found nothing, Matthews said.
