Susie Payne will play the role of Kim MacAfee and Jane Tallant will play her friend, Ursula Merkle. The Broadway hit, Bye, Bye Birdie, will be played three nights, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 19, 20 and 21, in the Tulare Union High School auditorium. The play opened April 14, 1961, with Dick Van Dyke and Chita Rivera in the starring roles. Dick Gautier played the part of Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley type. Van Dyke repeated his role of Albert Peterson in the movie version of Birdie, but the role of Rosie Alvarez was played by Janet Leigh. Ann-Margret played the role of Kim MacAfee in the movie and her boyfriend was played by Bobby Rydell.

Gautier repeated his role as Birdie as did Paul Lynde, who played the role of the harrassed father, MacAfee, in both productions. The play is the story of a rock and roll singer who is about to be inducted into the Army. The singer, Conrad Birdie, has a pompadour and thick sideburns. He wears gaudy gold lame costumes and speaks in a rugged voice. Birdies agent, Albert Peterson, is a mild-mannered man whose faithful secretary, Rose Alvarez, keeps the two in business.

Miss Alvarez concocts the idea of giving national publicity to Birdies induction into the service. He will bid farewell to America with a typical goodbye kiss for a typical all-American girl, she decides. Albert Petersons meddlesome and possessive mother, Mae, will be played by Susan Shaghoian.
