Police force honors long-time employee Tulare police officer Alice Marshall got a surprise Friday when she was called up stairs to the squadroom. Instead of a briefing, she was given a cake commemorating her 20 years with Tulare Police Department. Mrs. Marshall began work with the Tulare department as a policewoman-dispatcher, on May 20, 1957.

She is still a policewoman but is now the supervisor of the service division. During the 20 years she has been with the department, Mrs. Marshall has served in other capacities and in 1973 was a member of the departments School Resource Program. She has an associate in arts degree in criminal justice. Her husband, Dean Marshall, is the deputy chief of the Visalia Police Department.

COS offers class in Portuguese studies The College of the Sequoias will offer its first course in Portuguese studies this summer, according to Rosa Simas, course Entitled Literature of the Portuguese Language, the class will meet Monday and Wednesday evenings during the June 6 to July 15 summer session at the college. Miss Simas said the course will cover literature of Portugal, Brazil, the Azores Islands, Medeira and Cape Verde.

In addition, the contribution of Portuguese in the United States also will be discussed. Miss Simas said movies, slides, filmstrips, tapes and records will be used to help "explore aspects of Portuguese culture and folklore as they are reflected in the literature. Miss Simas is a native of the Azores and has been lmoKed in several Por-tUKuise related educational aitivities in California and eLewhere.
