San Francisco, May 27. News of the incorporation of the San Francisco and Great Salt Lake Railway was the subject of conversation everywhere in mercantile circles today. The general belief of the members of the executive committee of the Traffic Association seoms to be that the project will be successful, and that competition is not so far off as it appeared on the coming of the Traffic Association into the field. Surveyors sent out are now at the northeastern boundary of the Morago ranch, over the hills hack of Oakland. They are heading easterly along Walnut Creek canyon.

There are three routes to reach Oakland through the hills. The first is due east of the city, and the other two by way of Laundry farm There is but little doubt that the terminal point will be here, and a table established in that city connecting with San Francisco by ferry. This evening E. L. G.

Steele, one of the stockholders, was interviewed. He said that the company had fiye or six terminal points in view. He could not say whether the ferry would be in Oakland or out of Oakland. Several routes had also been investigated, but lie did not know exactly which one wrould be decided upon. All the money invested, Steele said, is California capital.

John S. Davie was also seen. He was asked hetlier or not the new road intends to use the strip of land that has caused so much trouble on the Oakland water front of late for a ferry slip. Davie replied that he was bound by an agreement not to say who would build a ferry at that place. A ferry was to be built, but even this fact could not have been made known except for the dispute that arose with the Southern Pacific company about the ownership.

Edward Bennett Drinks an Ounce of Deadly Lundannin. Edward Bennett, sick in body and despondent in heart, tiied to end his existence last evening by drinking an ounce of laudanum, a deadly poison. Bennett was paralyzed in his side about a year ago, and since he Mas attacked has not been able to work.

He has been despondent for some time, and has considered himself a burden on his family, and made up his mind to kill himself! For thepast weekhehas been more than usually melancholy, and last night he decided to commit self-destruction. He was at home with his mother, Mrs. William Bennett, at the corner of School and West streets. He took some handkerchiefs and gave them to his mother and sister, telling them he was going away. Mrs.

Bennett sent for her daughter, Mrs. Ewell Gilliam, and her husband to come over, as she thought her sons actions were strange. Bennett went to bed, and his sister was in his room talking to him. The room was dark, and Bennett, after a while, thought his sister had left. Drauing a two-ounce bottle of laudanum he placed it to his mouth and gulped about half of it down.

Miss Bennett noticed him and sprang to him and screamed. Her action caused him to spill some of the poison. It is thought he had the bottle under his pillow. Mr. Gilliam rushed down town for Dr.

Pendergrass. Bennett refused to drink an emetic. The effects of the poison soon made itself apparent, and Bennett sank into a stupor. James Lozier, a friend of the young man, was summoned, and work was at once commenced to keep the unfortunate young man awake. Dr.

Pendergrass injected into the calf of Bennetts leg a powerful emetic by a hyper-dermic syringe. The emetic soon had the desired effect, and produced vomiting. Another injection was made with the same good effect. Bennett was kept awake by frequent slaps administered by Lozier, and was otherwise roughly handled. The desire to sleep was hard to counteract, and it was necessary to frequently strike him to prevent him from sinking into a slumber that knew no waking.

Dr. Pendergrass at a late hour last night had strong hopes of his patients recovery, and Bennetts condition was improved udien a Delta reporter left the house. Struck by Lightning. Bordentown, N. May 27.

The pontoon under the apron at Benicia sprung a leak and filled with water, drawing the apron down so that the Solano cannot make her landing. A wrecking train and pumps have been at work all day, but have not yet raised the pontoon. All the Central Pacific overland trains have been sent by way of Stockton, and other trains have been delayed. The pontoon on the Porta Costa side of the strait sprung a leak and sunk. It is hard to say when the trains will again be able to cross the strait.

A Ruffianly Act. San Francisco, May 27. Last Sunday night Joseph Ford, Thomas Hayes, Gavin Dorin and George Kelley entered the restaurant of A. Church, and ordered supper. They were served and when the propiietor asked them for payment they set upon him and beat him insensible with some blunt instrument.

They then fled from the place but were arrested at their homes a few hours later. There is every probability that they will be charged with murder, as Church is now lying at the point of death and the chances are all against his recovery. Opium Seizure. San Francisco, May 27 Another seizure was made on the City of Puebla this afternoon. Inspector Holmes found forty cans of the best Hongkong opium in the coal.
